we’ar passionate about organics.
for our body products and incense we exclusively use organic, food-grade ingredients. we develop our recipes with a Balinese healer and herbalist, lalir, who is a blender of fine smelling organic goodness as well as the islands resident compost expert.

lalir works with local farmers to help develop organic alternatives and buys all the ingredients for her products at market price regardless of volume.

in our garments we use 100% certified organic cottons wherever possible whilst not contradicting our highest guiding principle of being fully holistic in approach.

indonesia has a massive textile industry and we’ar super committed to sourcing as much fabric as possible from our local environment. as there are still no certified organic cotton farms in Indonesia we currently work with factories who import organic cotton bulk from the US and spin and knit it locally. two years ago we were able to produce about 20% of our collection like this and now we’re up to more than 50%.

our continued support of local Balinese suppliers who sell organics increases their confidence and so slowly, the variety of textiles we can source like this also increases.

last year we’ar formed a relationship with an Indonesian duo –iwan and made, who have spent the last ten years or so studying and developing traditional dying techniques that use locally sourced plant materials to add pigment into cloth. adding some simple tools of modernity to reduce water consumption, and the insights of their global community to build a wetland treatment system for waste water these guys are evolving ancient tradition into an ever more functional craft. they favour using leaves and pruned branches to make their pigment extracts rather than waste fruit or wood that can better serve the earth in it’s tree form.

our early work with made and iwan produced two beautiful colours –a vibrant, spacious blue and a soft, dense cool grey. stay tuned for new colour developments in our summer2011 collection.
